Exceptionalism or Pride

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18 ESV)

What comes to your mind when you hear the words “American Exceptionalism”?

I admit, to me, the these words, when used by today’s politicians, echo a sense of pride; a destructive kind of pride neatly disguised to represent patriotism. Hey, I could be wrong and that’s ok with me! Actually, I pray that I am wrong. There is no doubt that God has had His hands on America and has blessed this nation tremendously but as we continue to stray from His word, so does our recognition of this blessing. When I hear people talk about American Exceptionalism their words seem to point inward. They seem to be saying, “Look at what I have done,” or “Look at what we have done,” with absolutely no acknowledgement of God. Not everyone is guilty of this and I am not trying to paint everyone with a broad brush but I also do not hear words of caution coming from anyone. Watching and Praying

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. (2 Timothy 3:1-5 ESV).

Good guess Paul; wait, that would mean everything else that has been accurately prophesied were also just lucky guesses. I think not! Just look around, turn on the news — any news channel — open a book, a magazine, a news paper, watch a movie, and yes take a close look at the church even. Paul may have said that with a gentle tone at the time but his words scream at us today. We have seen steady but continuous implosions within countries around the world and here in the US. Biased undertones have been rising to the surface of tumultuous storms and the actions of many are counter to what flows from their lips. There is so much happening around the world that are either stealing away peoples hopes or threatening to do so. We are one shot away from civil unrest here at home; one fighter jet violation away from what could start a long war. World leaders are flexing their muscles and leaning on political rhetoric to either solve or prevent what will ultimately come to pass. (more…)
