Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:5 ESV)
Life! It so often takes some pretty sharp turns. There are times when we see them coming and sometimes we don’t but most of the time there is nothing we can do but just go along for the ride and pray it ends soon. I’ve learned to seek the Lord in prayer through all things, good and bad. You may say, this is common sense! For you this may be true but for me there was a time not so long past that prayer seemed more of a bother than a way of life. I’m happy to report it is now the opposite — prayer is now a way of life for me.
Distractions will occur. Our plans and commitments may suddenly slip away from us without a warning and sometime without realizing it. Call it whatever you want, it does not have to be a new year resolution. For me, it is continuing to journal my thoughts both as a way of personal reflection and my personal blog. While it may be on our hearts and minds, bringing ourselves to doing it can be quite difficult. I find this to be especially true when it comes to engaging in activities that foster spiritual growth, or that contributes to the kingdom.
This last point is why it is even more important to develop a fervent prayer life. I say this with a recognition that it is an area in my life that needs much improvement. Still, it is prayer that keeps me smiling when the world seems to be snarling at me; prayer keeps me focused on my commitments, even when I have neglected them. Prayer brings everything into alignment and even when it doesn’t seem like we are not hearing an answer we should take comfort because the Lord is a friend to and instructs those who fear him (ps. 25: 12, 14).
Are you experiencing a season of unexpected turns and distractions? Take comfort my friend; let us humble ourselves before God and continually seek Him in prayer. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble His way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. (Psalm 25:9-10 ESV)
