The Watchman's Diary

Dear diary, I it has a while since we’ve shared our thoughts. I would love to bring you what you would consider “happy thoughts” but the world refuses to bring them about. Yes, my ultimate message is one of good news, for that is exactly what we find in the word of God; yes, that is the Gospel. It is the news that Salvation is possible; it is a sure hope for those who believe in the redemptive plan of God carried out in the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.

Today’s proverb is a unique reflection of the state of the world today. How low we have come as a society and how damaging our ignorance of God. Some say the best way to avoid being overwhelmed by the bad things in the world is to simply ignore them; to bury our heads in the sand and just think happy thoughts. That approach is a hopeless ignorance of the nature of sin and the destiny of this world as we know it. It is also a one that a watchman cannot adopt, for just as the natural man will succumb to the natural desires of the flesh, the watchman must remain vigilant to warn of the coming wrath.

Since the start of 2017 there have been devastating floods, volcanic activity, landslides, wildfires, earthquakes, and rainfall with more frequency and intensity that in recorded history. The persecution of Christians has increased and the indifference of people is astonishing.

What troubles me the most is the response – or lack thereof – from the church. The church is remarkably quiet about many of these things, especially here in the west where less than a handful of social, political, and moral issues occupy 99 percent of our time. We are playing the enemies game; paying attention to the shiny object that seem to play on our fleshly desires and ignoring the larger plot to destroy our souls.

It is no surprise that as we have been falling away from God and compromising his word that the world has become more boorish and lacking human discernment. It is no wonder that the more we desire to learn about ourselves the farther we grow from the God who created us. We take so much pride in our human accomplishments that we become drunk on our own self-deception. For this, the world will drink the wrath of it’s own foolishness.

Our leaders, who we have placed our hopes in, have failed us and will continue to do so for it is the destiny of any nation who wish to put their trust in man and not God. The age of grace is grinding to a halt; yes it is already here and we are on a rapid descent without brakes and the ability to steer. The rudders of our self-absorbed ship have fallen off and the cliff is dead ahead. The captain of the ship has abandoned hope, the crew are frantic, and the passengers are clueless because they have willfully given over their eyes to a deceitful guide. Yes, our leaders have failed, the governments of the world are in a quandary, and the people have no idea what lies ahead.

Yet, God has already revealed to us in His word that these things must come to pass. God has told us through the prophets and from His Word, made flesh, that what we are seeing is to be but that there is hope. God has given us the guide for survival in these last day and for the Christian, it is not avoidance and retreat. The Christian’s guide for survival is to enter into this battle, not for our own selves, but for the souls of those who are lost. We who are watchful must blow the trumpet and point to the rally point beyond enemy lines. We must suffer the bumps, bruises, and beating in order that God, through us, may be glorified. For “…everyone who bears My name, whom I created for my glory – I formed him, yes, I made him” (Isaiah 43:7).

So be watchful, pay attention to the things that are happening here and around the world. Stay in the Word of God and be mindful of the season so that we are not overtaken. For we “are not in the dark, so that the Day should take you by surprise like a thief”. “God has not intended that we should experience his fury, but that we should gain deliverance through our Lord Yeshua the Messiah”.
