Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie.
Psalm 40:4
Does it seem to you that what was once true is no longer accepted as such. I am not talking about things that are susceptible to change. I am talking about the unchanging word of God and His expectation of us. Has anyone tried to convince you that God’s word no longer applies to us, or that because the times have changed His commands no longer apply to us? The questions then become, who changed, God or us?
Since it is impossible that God has changed, the obvious answer is that we have changed. Anyone who says that God has changed makes God a liar because He said, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). That anyone should convince us that the Word of God no longer apply means that we either do not read it for ourselves, or that we read but do not comprehend. Have we so bought into the idea of being sheep that we fail to think critically about what others say? Have we simply accepted that those who lead congregations are better shepherds that the ‘Good Shepherd’? David wrote in Psalm 40:4 that God blesses those who make the Lord their trust; those who do not run after prideful and deceptive people.
The Apostle Paul warned us that “a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths (2 Timothy 4:3-4). One may argue that we have long been in such a time, but this trend has increased drastically in the current century. The reason many are so easily convinced that the Word of God is no longer relevant is because that is what they want to believe. They seek to be free from their perceived restraint to seek after what their hearts desire. They falsely equate obedience to God with being chained, not realizing that true oppression is yielding to the desires of the flesh.
We live in a celebrity focused culture where many hold on to every word of a famous person, accepting it as true without even testing it. Paul also warned us that there will come a lawless person who will deceive many because they hate the truth, and that “for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:11). Our worship of celebrities and wealth has prepared us well to receive such a person. Especially since many are so willing to deny scripture and, in so doing, make God out to be a liar.
If you have accepted the lie that God has changed and that any part of His Word no longer apply, now is the time to repent and walk in the truth. Let us continue to “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12). Let us test every spirit and to seek after God, holding strong to the Gospel of Jesus our Messiah!
